The mental health of Australian children and young people

While most children and young people in Australia are happy, feel positive about the future and are satisfied with their lives overall, some suffer poor mental health.

Around 13.6% of Australian children aged 4-11 are experiencing a mental health disorder, most commonly anxiety, depression, conduct disorders and ADHD. Around 20% of young people aged 11-17 experienced high to very high levels of psychological distress. And around 15% of people aged 18-24 experienced high to very high levels of psychological distress.

Although data in Australia is a bit limited, there is some international evidence that mental ill health in children and young people is increasing. The pandemic, particularly in Victoria, has had significant negative mental health impacts on many children across all demographic groups.

It is estimated that half of all mental illnesses experienced in adulthood begin before age 14, and that over 75% of people are likely to develop mental health problems before the age of 25.

Most mental disorders can be effectively treated, and earlier treatment leads to better outcomes, however it is estimated that only half of children and young people with a mental disorder have received mental health support (and often are not receiving a treatment that has been shown to be effective).

Schools have been identified in the National Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy as important settings to promote the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people.

The task for schools is significant and can feel overwhelming. Without appropriate resources and professional support, educators may be unaware, reluctant or unsure how to assist students. Educators at all levels are likely to need additional supports to continue to build positive wellbeing cultures and to promote the mental wellbeing of children and young people.
